National Service (NS) Deferment
National Service (NS) in Singapore
Under the Enlistment Act (Chapter 93), all male citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents will be liable for National Service (NS) registration upon reaching the age of 16.5 years old.

Upon receiving the NS Registration Notice, it is important for parents to assist students in following the instructions on the notice and register for National Service as per the instructions within the letter at the earliest possible time.
Do note that for non-compliance with any National Service Notices or Reporting Orders is an offence under the Enlistment Act. Offenders shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or to both.
Pre-enlistees can be granted deferment from full-time National Service (NS) to pursue full-time studies only up to a first education bar qualification (i.e. GCE ‘A’ Level, polytechnic diploma, or their equivalent).
Should students be interested to continue studying full-time in Year 11, 12 and 13 (Age 16 and above) with The Winstedt School, parents are required to help students apply deferment from NS during the registration process. The deferment cut-off age for students at The Winstedt School is 19 years old.
To request for a school letter to support your child’s NS deferment application, please reach out to Samuel at stan@winstedt.edu.sg. You may also reach out to Samuel for any queries with regards to National Service Enlistment.
For students who are at least 16.5 years old and wish to be enlisted before turning 18, parents may do so under the Voluntary Early Enlistment Scheme (VEES). However, parent(s)’ or guardian(s)’ must provide the consent and students must be medically and physically fit.
