Conducting Scientific Investigations (CSI) Elective
Meet our student entrepreneurs – it all started in the “Conducting Scientific Investigations” (CSI) elective, where a group of Upper Prep students created a natural pH indicator!
Extending Their Project
After researching, they chose blueberries, which contain anthocyanin pigments, as their starting material. These pigments change colour in response to acidity or alkalinity, turning red in acidic solutions, purple in neutral solutions, and blue-green in alkaline solutions.
They boiled the blueberries, then collected the extract by filtration. Students also extended their project to produce pH indicator paper, which is costly to purchase. What a great way to mix Science with entrepreneurship! Who knows what they’ll innovate next?
