We are delighted to announce that The Winstedt School has partnered with the National University of Singapore, School of Continuing and Lifelong Education (“NUS SCALE”) to offer a scholarship programme for our Middle and Senior School students. Student participants will obtain a certificate of completion from NUS SCALE.
The partnership is part of Winstedt’s strategic initiative to advance its academic excellence and experiential learning. The 4-day interactive Programme entitled “Science Discovery: The Covid-19 Pandemic” is a bespoke Programme designed jointly by NUS and Winstedt for Winstedt students. The Programme will be delivered during the 2021-22 Academic Year in 20-23 September 2021 and 9-12 May 2022. Twenty select students per Semester will be offered a scholarship to attend the Programme.
The Winstedt-NUS SCALE Programme is comprised of three specialised workshops designed to engage students to understand more about the COVID-19 pandemic. The workshops include the following components: (1) Modelling of an Epidemic, (2) Bioinformatics, and (3) Immunology and Masks.

Some big questions to be explored during the Programme include:
- How can Mathematics help us make reasonable decisions about the situation?
- How do scientists trace an organism back to its ancestors?
- How was the first COVID-19 genome determined?
- With modernization and more advanced machinery available for Biology research, what are the tools that we can use to help us answer the questions we have about our world, and deal with the huge chunks of data coming in everyday from labs and experiments?
Winstedt student participants will also be introduced to parts of the NUS Kent Ridge Campus to fully experience University life during their studies.
“Giving students the opportunity to experience ‘life-on-campus’ will be truly instrumental in motivating our students to envision life beyond Middle and Senior School. This calibrated effort from both ends will expose our students to the internationally recognised National University of Singapore (NUS),” said Fabian John, Senior Teacher and Head of Department for Maths who is also the designated lead for this Programme. Winstedt’s lead Science Senior Teacher Dr Chaal Balbir Kaur will also provide guidance to Winstedt students through the Course.

“For students with an interest in, and aptitude for, Science, this is a fantastic opportunity. As our students begin planning their exit from Winstedt and consider their options for future career and/or post-secondary education, exposure to higher-level content in an institution of this calibre is truly invaluable,” stated Tara Beck, Senior Teacher and Head of Careers and Post-Secondary Education.
